The Writers Studio at 30

The Writers Studio at 30

Founded by the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Philip Schultz, The Writers Studio is a landmark school of creative writing. The Writers Studio's at 30 celebrates the school's 30th anniversary with 500 pages of fiction and poetry by over 100 authors. You'll find work by students and teachers, authors on the advisory board, and other distinguished writers—including Matthew Klam, Cornelius Eady, Edward Hirsch, and Patricia Smith—who have helped build this prestigious independent literary community.

Every week, I presented a new story. Finally something did click, the very thing that’s their specialty at The Writers Studio, emotional content. Before, my work was dead. When I brought in my breakthrough story, I felt I was carrying a weird animal in my bag. It was the first story I sold.

—Jennifer Egan, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

I always imagine a possessive apostrophe in the name of The Writer’s Studio (or, “The Writers’ Studio”?): This undertaking is possessed by writers, as they are possessed by the art.

—Robert Pinsky, United States Poet Laureate, 1997–2000
